Cub Scout Festival

The SAJ raft making event is a dynamic project that will thrill and challenge your cub scouts.  I am told this will be the first time this particular project is being undertaken so there will be a learning curve for all involved.  Packs/dens are to design and construct rafts capable of flotation and racing.

In preparing for this event Cub Scout leaders can incorporate the following concepts as applicable:
- Ecology
- Conservation
- Construction/Design
- Engineering
- Teamwork
- Planning
- Flotation & Buoyancy
- Water Safety

Teams of scouts will design and build their rafts using whatever materials they wish.  The primary flotation device for the rafts requires the creative use of recycled 1-1/2 to 2 liter plastic PET bottles with caps.  Estimate approximately 200 PET bottles for a raft capable of holding 6 scouts. More are required if heavy construction materials are used.  Teams must develop their own method for attaching flotation bottles to raft.

It is highly recommended that the cub scout leaders in attendance at this event with their scouts complete the BSA Safe Swim Defense and BSA Safety Afloat online training.

This is a unique opportunity to develop a real sense of teamwork for your scouts in an activity that will make them strive and grow.  The culmination of which is participation in an international activity that your scout will surely never forget.  Some packs may even be able to use this for the International Activity Award and/or for the Pack Summertime Activity Award.
